Where do you see examples of Old English language and Anglo-Saxon culture today? Why do you think those vestiges survive?

Check out this link for some thoughts on Old English, Latin, and Greek in Harry Potter.

  1. Like someone else responded, I thought of the Anglo-Saxon warriors, only I related them to our nation's military. Soldiers are also expected to be strong, brave, and willing to sacrifice their own lives at any time. Not only are they highly respected, but I have known some people who idolize soldiers in the same way sports fans can idolize their teams. In the same way that the Anglo-Saxons revered their warriors, we as Americans look up to our nation's heroes.

  2. When I read this question, the first things that occurred to me as being brought over from Anglosaxon culture is what we have in our literature and television. While many television shows have inaccuracies when attempting to portray the Anglosaxon period, shows like Game of Thrones attempt to recreate the attitude and traditions from the time period. Also, the usage of Runes and language can be found in modern books, especially more fantasy-based novels. I think these have survived because people have a fascination with the way things were in the past as well as an interest in the unknown.
